If you are planning to apply to a Malaysian public university through the UPUOnline system, it is important to understand how your UPU merit score is calculated.
Your merit score determines how competitive your application is when applying to Diploma, Foundation, or Degree programmes at public universities (IPTA).
The calculation method differs depending on whether you are applying with SPM results or STPM results. This guide explains how both systems work and how your final merit score is determined.
Candidates with SPM Qualification
For applicants using SPM results, the merit score is calculated based on a combination of academic subjects and co-curricular involvement.
The system first calculates an 80-point academic base score, which is then scaled to represent 90% of your total merit. Your co-curricular activities make up the final 10%.
| Component | Maximum Base Marks |
|---|---|
| Core Subjects (Mata Pelajaran Wajib) | 40 |
| Stream Subjects (Mata Pelajaran Pilihan) | 30 |
| Additional Subjects (Mata Pelajaran Tambahan) | 10 |
| Total Academic Base Score | 80 |
The official formula used to calculate the final Merit Score is:
Merit Score = ((Total Academic Base Score / 80) × 90) + Co-curriculum Points (10%)
SPM Grade Point System
Each SPM grade is assigned a specific point value which is used in the merit calculation.
| Grade | Points |
|---|---|
| A+ | 18 |
| A | 16 |
| A- | 14 |
| B+ | 12 |
| B | 10 |
| C+ | 8 |
| C | 6 |
| D | 4 |
| E | 2 |
| G | 0 |
1. Core Subjects (40 Base Marks)
The first part of the calculation includes four compulsory subjects:
- Bahasa Melayu
- English
- Mathematics
- History
Your grades for these 4 subjects are calculated over the maximum possible marks (4 subjects × 18 points = 72) and scaled to 40 base marks.
2. Stream Subjects (30 Base Marks)
Next, the system takes your best two subjects according to your specific study stream (e.g., STEM A, STEM B, STEM C, or KSI).
Examples for STEM Streams include:
- Physics
- Chemistry
- Biology
- Additional Mathematics
Your grades for these 2 subjects are calculated over the maximum possible marks (2 subjects × 18 points = 36) and scaled to 30 base marks.
3. Additional Subjects (10 Base Marks)
Finally, the system selects your next best two subjects that haven't been counted yet. These can be any remaining SPM subjects.
Your grades for these 2 subjects are calculated over the maximum possible marks (2 subjects × 18 points = 36) and scaled to 10 base marks.
4. Co-Curriculum Marks (10%)
Students receive a co-curriculum score ranging from 0 to 10, based on their participation in school activities (Sports, Uniformed bodies, Clubs). This score directly contributes to the final 10% of the total merit calculation.
Example of SPM Merit Calculation
Let’s look at exactly how the math works for a STEM student with the following results:
| Subject Category | Subject | Grade | Points |
|---|---|---|---|
| Core Subjects | Bahasa Melayu | A | 16 |
| English | B+ | 12 | |
| Mathematics | A- | 14 | |
| History | A | 16 | |
| Stream Subjects | Physics | B+ | 12 |
| Chemistry | A- | 14 | |
| Additional Subjects | Biology | B | 10 |
| Additional Mathematics | B+ | 12 |
Step 1: Calculate the Academic Base Score (Out of 80)
- Core Component: Total marks (58) / Max possible (72) × 40 = 32.22
- Stream Component: Total marks (26) / Max possible (36) × 30 = 21.67
- Additional Component: Total marks (22) / Max possible (36) × 10 = 6.11
Total Academic Base Score = 32.22 + 21.67 + 6.11 = 60.00
Step 2: Apply the Merit Formula
Now, scale the 80-point base score to 90%, and add the student's co-curriculum score (Let's assume the student got an 8.00 for co-curriculum).
Academic Component:
= (60.00 / 80) × 90
= 67.50
Final Merit Score:
= Academic Component (67.50) + Co-Curriculum (8.00)
= 75.50
This final score of 75.50 is what will be used when competing for programmes through the UPUOnline system.
Candidates with STPM Qualification
For students applying with STPM results, the merit calculation is much simpler.
The merit score is determined using:
| Component | Weight |
|---|---|
| Academic Performance (CGPA / PNGK) | 90% |
| Co-Curriculum | 10% |
The academic component is based entirely on the student’s STPM CGPA (PNGK).
STPM Merit Calculation Formula
The formula used is:
Academic Score = (PNGK / 4.00) × 90
Final Merit Score = Academic Score + Co-curriculum Points
Your STPM CGPA contributes up to 90 marks, while co-curricular activities contribute up to 10 marks, giving a maximum merit score of 100.
Example of STPM Merit Calculation
Assume a student has the following results:
STPM CGPA (PNGK): 3.50
Co-curriculum score: 8.00
Step 1 – Calculate Academic Score
Academic Score
= (3.50 / 4.00) × 90
= 78.75
Step 2 – Add Co-Curriculum Score
Final Merit Score
= 78.75 + 8.00
= 86.75
This score will then be used in the UPUOnline admission process.
Official UPU Merit Calculators
Students can calculate their merit scores using the official calculators provided by the Ministry of Higher Education.

These calculators allow students to enter their examination results and co-curricular marks to determine their UPU merit score automatically.
Why Your Merit Score Matters
Your merit score plays an important role in determining:
- Whether you qualify for certain programmes
- Your competitiveness compared with other applicants
- Your chances of being offered a place in high-demand courses
Programmes such as medicine, engineering, and computer science are often highly competitive and may require higher merit scores.
Understanding how your merit score is calculated can help you make more informed choices when selecting programmes through the UPUOnline application system.
Planning Your Next Step After SPM/STPM
Once you understand your merit score, the next step is to explore the programmes that match your academic results and interests.
