Course Overview

The Doctor of Philosophy in Science programme aims to develop individuals who are able to create knowledge through innovative research and develop new techniques and practices that are significant to a field of research.

This programme seeks to produce graduates who can carry out specialized areas of research in science for the benefit of society and the nation. Graduates will also be able to respond to problems with innovative ideas translated to new knowledge. They will be able to communicate research findings through critical dialogue and interpersonal skills and develop intellectual property and promote knowledge expansion.

Candidates will be exposed to the many aspects of research activity including critical analysis of literature, identifying an area of contribution, gathering information and communicating ideas through journal publications and conferences. Graduates of the Doctor of Philosophy in Science programme at QIU will develop into leaders and innovators in the fields of Science.

Entry Requirements

Minimum Entry Requirements

  • A Master's degree in related fields as accepted by the QIU Senate; OR
  • A Master's degree in non-related fields as accepted by the QIU Senate, subject to having relevant working experience and rigorous internal assessment, OR
  • A Master's degree in non-related fields as accepted by the QIU Senate and without relevant working experience, subject to passing pre-requisite courses; OR
  • Other qualifications equivalent to a Master's degree recognised by the Malaysian Government.

International students: IELTS Band 5.5 / MUET Band 4* or its equivalent (*Note: MUET requirement updated on 16/3/2023)

Note:

A. HEP can take excellent Bachelor's Degree (Level 6, MQF) graduates for direct admission to the Doctoral Degree by Research (Level 8, MQF) programme with the following conditions:

  • Students have first class Bachelor's degree or equivalent qualification; or
  • Students have obtained a CGPA of at least 3.67 or equivalent from either an academic or Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programme; and
  • Evaluated through rigorous internal assessment by the HEP; and
  • Approved by the HEP Senate and accepted as a candidate for the Doctoral Degree (Level 8, MQF) programme. Students must demonstrate appropriate progress during the candidature period.

B. Bachelor's degree candidates who are registered for master's degree programmes may apply to convert to the doctoral degree programmes subjected to the following conditions:

  • within 1 year for full-time and within 2 years for part-time candidates;
  • having shown competency and capability in conducting research at the doctoral level through rigorous internal evaluation by the HEP; and
  • approval of the HEP Senate.
  • All fees are in RM (Ringgit Malaysia) currency unless stated otherwise.
