Course Overview

Our full-time/part-time research programme is designed to provide advanced, research-based studies in business and management, delivering in-depth knowledge and analytical skills in specialised areas. It fosters a systematic, rigorous, and ethical approach to research, contributing valuable insights to academia and managerial practice. The programme cultivates a mindset of lifelong learning and equips students with robust theoretical and methodological foundations, empowering them to conduct independent research with confidence and impact.

Supervised by experienced Professors and researchers and supported by excellent research facilities, students will be able to think in a systematic way and apply quantitative and qualitative techniques to business related problems and also to get to experience an incredible research journey from attending research-intensive workshops, local and international conferences to publishing research articles in local and international journals.

Curriculum

Semester 1

  • Research Methodology – Techniques & Trends - To equip students with the knowledge, skills and abilities they will need to effectively carry out a business /management research. A particular emphasis will be placed upon developing individuals towards their workplace-based PhD dissertation / project. More focus is given to the specific issues faced by researchers when carrying out research in an organizational setting.
  • Research Design: Qualitative, Quantitative and Mixed Methods Approaches - This course covers procedures, design, conduct and reporting of social science research.

Semester 2 to 6

  • Thesis Preparation & Viva Voce - This unit requires students to prepare a research proposal and a thesis. Students will continue to develop a range of skills necessary for research including accessing library databases, using relevant software as applicable, refining a research topic, and identifying a theoretical or conceptual framework. In addition, students will develop an understanding of research ethics. Students will prepare and then defend a research proposal. Each student is required to complete a dissertation to meet the requirements. Students produce dissertations in the fields of Human Resource Management, Marketing, Accounting and Finance, Management, Technology Management and Business Information System related to studies. The format and style of the dissertation should comply with the guidelines set by First City University College.

Entry Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Business or related fields with (a minimum CGPA of 2.75) accepted by the University Senate;
  • A Bachelor’s Degree in related fields with minimum CGPA of 2.50 with 5 years working experience in a relevant field can be accepted subject to rigorous internal assessment.

Further Studies:

Lays a strong foundation for advanced degrees like a Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) or PhD in Management.
