Course Overview

The Faculty of Dentistry at USIM conducts a five-year undergraduate educational programme leading to the degree of Bachelor of Dental Surgery. Successful candidates shall be awarded the degree BDS (USIM). The curriculum uses an outcome-based approach to education and student assessment. This five-year programme is divided into two phases. The Basic Science Phase (Phase I) consists of the first and second years while the next three years are considered as the Clinical Phase (Phase II). The basic science phase is designed to equip students with a strong foundation and understanding of basic medical and dental science subjects before entering the clinical phase. Whilst the Clinical Phase (Phase II) is most important in that the educational activities are organised so that they are able to apply the knowledge and skills in the clinical set-up.

Entry Requirements

General Requirements

SPM
Must possess the Malaysian Certificate of Education (SPM) with at least:

  • Grade C in Bahasa Melayu / Bahasa Melayu (July Paper).
  • Grade E in History (for results from 2013 onwards).

AND

STPM
Pass the Malaysian Higher School Certificate (STPM) examination with at least:

  • A minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.00.
  • Grade C in General Studies (Pengajian Am).
  • TWO (2) Grade Cs in any other subjects not already counted.

AND

MUET
Obtain at least Band 1.0 in the Malaysian University English Test (MUET) for examinations starting from Session 1, 2021 onwards, with a validity period of 5 years from the date the test results are issued.

Specific Requirements

  • Obtain a minimum CGPA of 3.50 at the STPM level.
  • Obtain at least a Grade B in THREE (3) of the following subjects at the STPM level:
    • Biology
    • Chemistry
    • Physics / Mathematics M / Mathematics T
  • Obtain at least a Grade B in FIVE (5) of the following subjects at the SPM level:
    • Biology
    • Chemistry
    • Physics
    • Mathematics / Additional Mathematics
    • Islamic Education / Tasawwur Islam / Islamic Shariah Education / Al-Quran and Al-Sunnah Education / Hifz Al-Quran / Maharat Al-Quran / Usul al-Din / Al-Shariah / Turath Dirasat Islamiah / Turath Al-Quran and Al-Sunnah / Manahij Al-‘Ulum Al-Islamiah
  • Obtain at least a Grade C in ONE (1) of the following subjects at the SPM level:
    • Arabic / Higher Arabic / Arabic (Communication) / Al-Lughah Al-Arabiah Al-Mu‘asirāh / Turath Bahasa Arab / Al-Adab Wa Al-Balaghah
  • Obtain at least a Grade C in ONE (1) additional subject at the SPM level, excluding subjects in Literature, Arts, Performing Arts, Music, Creative Multimedia, Design, Geography, Economics, Business, Accounting, Entrepreneurship Studies, and related creative or humanities subjects listed.
  • Obtain at least Band 3.0 in the Malaysian University English Test (MUET) for results obtained from Session 1, 2021 onwards, with a validity period of 5 years from the date the test results are issued.
  • Must pass the prescribed test and/or interview set by the Public University.

Notes:

  • All applicants must declare if they have:
    • been convicted of any criminal offence;
    • any serious physical or mental illness; and/or
    • any serious infectious disease that may affect future dental practice.
  • Applicants with any of the following are not eligible for the dentistry programme:
    • Convictions involving offences against the human body;
    • Dishonesty (e.g. cheating in examinations, document falsification, plagiarism);
    • Serious physical or mental illness;
    • Serious infectious diseases.
  • Failure to declare information that may affect suitability for dental practice may result in termination of studies, as honesty, integrity, and good health are essential qualities for a dentist and dental student.
  • All fees are in RM (Ringgit Malaysia) currency unless stated otherwise.
