Course Overview

The Master in Special Needs Education programme aims to produce graduates with advanced knowledge and professional competence in supporting learners with diverse learning needs across educational settings. The programme emphasises inclusive education, assessment and intervention strategies, evidence-based pedagogical practices, and ethical considerations in special needs education.

Graduates will be able to plan, implement, and evaluate appropriate educational support for learners with disabilities, learning difficulties, and developmental differences, and to work collaboratively with educators, families, and relevant professionals. The programme also provides pathways for professional practice, leadership, and further research in special needs education.

Curriculum

Programme Structure

Comprises four blocks: each block = 10 weeks. Each block is divided into 2 phases: one phase = 5 weeks.

BLOCK 1

  • Phase 1 (Weeks 1-5): MSN1013X Diversities of Learners with Disabilities (IA=40%, GA=60%: Written report=40%, Oral presentation=20%); MSN1023X Strategic Instructional Design for Children with Developmental Disorders (IA=40%, GA=60%: Written report=40%, Oral presentation=20%)
  • Phase 2 (Weeks 6-10): MSN1033X Assistive Technologies in Special Education (IA=40%, GA=60%: Written report=40%, Oral presentation=20%); MSN1043X Academic Writing (IA=40%, GA=60%: Written report=40%, oral presentation=20%)

BLOCK 2

  • Phase 1 (Weeks 1-5): MSN1054X Early Identification and Intervention in Special Education (IA=40%, GA=60%: Written report=40%, Oral presentation=20%); MSN1063X Curriculum Design and Innovative Pedagogies for Special Education (IA=40%, GA=60%: Written report=40%, Oral presentation=20%)
  • Phase 2 (Weeks 6-10): MSN1074X Research Methodology (IA=40%, GA=60%: Written report=40%, Oral presentation=20%)

BLOCK 3

  • Phase 1 (Weeks 1-5): MSN1083 Effective Behaviour Management for Learners with Diverse Needs in Inclusive Education (IA=40%, GA=60%: Written report=40%, Oral presentation=20%); MSN1094 Individualised Education Programmes for Diverse Learners (IA=40%, GA=60%: Written report=40%, Oral presentation=20%)
  • Phase 2 (Weeks 6-10): MSN1104 Trends and Issues in Special Education (IA=40%, GA=60%: Written report=40%, Oral presentation=20%)

BLOCK 4

  • Phase 1 (Weeks 1-10): MSN1116 Research Project (Proposal Defense (PD)=20%, Research Project (RP)=80%)

Entry Requirements

Minimum Entry Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Education field (Level 6, MQF) with a minimum CGPA of 2.50 or its equivalent as accepted by the HEP Senate; OR
  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Education field with a minimum CGPA of 2.00 can be accepted subject to rigorous internal assessment; OR
  • A Bachelor’s Degree with a minimum CGPA of 2.50 must undergo prerequisite courses; OR
  • A Bachelor’s Degree with a minimum CGPA of 2.00, can be accepted subject to rigorous internal assessment AND must undergo prerequisite courses; OR
  • Non-degree holders (Malaysian & International) with at least a Diploma or any qualification equivalent to Level 4 MQF or Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysian (STPM) may obtain MQA Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (Access) [APEL.A] approval for programme admission. OR
  • Other qualifications equivalent recognised by the Malaysian Government as equivalent to the above requirements

English Competency Requirement for International student: Minimum MUET Band 4 or IELTS 4.0

  • Foundations of Educational Theories, Philosophy and Principles (MSN2023)
  • Language, Literacy and Communication in Special Needs Education (MSN2033)
