For most graduates, the scroll represents a key to a promising career path.?
For Rasidah binti Abdullah, it represents the culmination of her journey from a stateless individual to a full-fledged citizen of Malaysia with a Bachelor of Finance and Investment (Hons) degree.?
Rasidah’s inspiring story became the highlight at Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology’s (TAR UMT) final convocation ceremony of the year held on 20 – 23 December 2025 in its Kuala Lumpur campus.
Faced with challenges due to her status when she sought to further her studies, Rasidah grasped at the chance to transform her life after she was offered a place to study at TAR UMT. Now, she is not only a proud graduate but also a recipient of the prestigious President’s Award and Public Bank Excellence Award (Finance Category).
“My academic journey may have been very challenging, and I definitely was nervous about whether I was able to pursue my tertiary education due to my status. This is one of the reasons why I worked so much harder in university, because I do not want to waste this opportunity and disappoint myself, my family, and friends, who put so much faith in me.
“I am very thankful to TAR UMT’s belief in me and their noble founding principle that education should be accessible to anyone regardless of their background – it has allowed me to fulfil my dream of graduating and securing a pathway to a good career,” said Rasidah, who is currently working as a budget analyst in the financial technology sector.
Another inspiring graduate with a story to tell is Mr Lo Yean Meow, who graduated with a Master of Counselling at the tender age of 70. It was TAR UMT's lifelong learning mantra that convinced him to pursue his Master’s Degree.
"I provide counselling services on a voluntary basis to keep myself active and sharp after retirement, and the Master of Counselling qualification seems like a natural decision because it will help me understand how to help people even more effectively moving forward. The journey to obtain my scroll was definitely not easy, but I believe the conducive environment and unconditional support from the academic staff made it an unforgettable experience. I am grateful to TAR UMT for providing me with this opportunity," said Mr Lo.
The December 2025 convocation ceremony was presided over by Prof Dato’ Indera Ir Dr Lee Sze Wei, President of TAR UMT, who handed graduation scrolls to 97 postgraduates and 4,051 Bachelor’s degree graduates.
“TAR UMT will always continue to uphold the pledge of its founders to grant access to education to anyone regardless of background, creed, or race so that graduands can have a shot at enriching their lives and future. I hope all our graduands will take the values, skills, and knowledge they obtain here and make a mark on the world, help build a sustainable world, and lead by example by contributing back to society," he said.?
For the year 2025, the University has produced a grand total of 12,334 graduates across its campuses nationwide.
