TAR UMT - A Class That Changed Everything

January 1, 2026 | Campus News

When Diploma in Accounting student Nerys H’ng took the Civic Consciousness and Volunteerism (CCV) course at Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology (TAR UMT), she thought it was just another subject about moral values. She soon realised how wrong she was.

It turns out that the mandatory CCV course focuses on civil responsibility, empathy, and social ethics. Nerys and her course mates were to organise a community project for a Carnival Day to raise funds for charity. ?“My brain immediately clicked, and that was when I knew that what we were doing was for a good cause,” she recalled the moment after the lecturer explained the objective of the course.

Nerys shared how moving from study to action motivated her: "It was no longer about classroom theory. We had to decide, as a team, what to do with the booth space allocated to us for the carnival. The team agreed to have a games booth as games are a natural crowd puller. To make the idea work, we had to source for sponsors to support us, so we approached several sponsors. Fortunately, we were able to secure sponsorships thanks to the long-standing reputation of the CCV course among sponsors. On top of financial sponsorship, we also succeeded in getting sponsors for prizes, such as tupperwares, thermos cups and mugs, which were a great hit in attracting visitors to our booth?

"Everything went smoothly on Carnival Day, and seeing how visitors were enjoying themselves at our booth was motivating for the team. But what was more important was that knowing what we were doing was for a good cause made all our hard work worth our time and effort,” she added.

Leong Chee Wai, a student of the Diploma in Business Administration, on the other hand, was involved in selling food at the carnival. He was also responsible for overseeing the financial aspect of the team for the project. ?He discovered that the course changed his view of success and personal growth.

“Besides managing the balance sheet, I also handled the cooking and logistics, together with a few team members. Competing with other stalls was tough, but all of us worked hard as a team to ensure we sold as much food as possible to raise funds. This experience changed my view of success and personal growth as I have learnt the importance of good teamwork and shared success is a lot more satisfying. I am truly grateful for this valuable experience,” he stated.

The true reward of their shared effort became clear at the CCV Course Fundraising Donation Presentation Ceremony held in September this year, where the students officially handed over their raised funds amounting to RM166,200.45 to recipients from 19 organisations assisting the poor, marginalised, physically and mentally challenged, the sick, and abused animals.

Persekutuan Orang Pekak Malaysia was among the recipients of the funds. Its representative, Helen Low Li Lan, expressed her gratitude to the students via a translator. She highlighted the challenges faced by the Deaf community, particularly in communication and education and shared that the students’ donation would help fund training programmes and resources for deaf children in Malaysia. “This support is more than just money. It is about the priceless value of knowing our young people believe in us. Your care uplifts our entire community and gives us hope,” she said

Chee Wai recalled how he felt when he listened to Helen Low’s sharing. “Ms Helen stood confidently before everyone, using sign language to express her heartfelt gratitude. That moment moved me deeply. It was the first time I truly saw the real impact of what we had done. In that instant, all the challenges, planning, and long nights felt worth it. It was fulfilling for me to see that our hard work is deeply appreciated,” he shared. ?

The CCV course has been running for 12 years, and to date, TAR UMT students have collectively raised over RM1.9 million for charity.
